This is the whole reason POV Homestead exists. I’m not doing this with money, I’m doing it without much of it.
The rules I live by:
- Used beats new. Tools, fencing, lumber, containers, somebody’s upgrade is your starter kit.
- Free is a price. Wood already down on the ground is free heat and free lumber.
- Do it yourself or don’t do it. Every contractor quote gets a second quote: what does it cost if I learn it? Sometimes the answer is “hire the guy” (wells, I’m not drilling my own well). Usually it’s not.
- One project at a time. Half-finished projects cost double. Finish the fence before you buy the goats.
- Track every dollar. I’ll publish our real numbers. If the chickens cost $8 a dozen in feed, I’m going to say so.
Homesteading isn’t expensive. Impatience is expensive.
