Here’s the short version: the sun charges batteries, the batteries run your stuff, and you learn real fast what “stuff” actually matters.
The pieces:
- Panels catch the sun. More panels = more power, obviously, but start by figuring out what you need first.
- Batteries store it. This is the expensive part. Size your battery bank for 2–3 cloudy days or you’ll be miserable.
- Inverter turns battery power into house power (12V DC to 120V AC).
- Charge controller sits between panels and batteries so you don’t cook them.
What I chose and why: battery over gas for everything I can. Gas means trips to town and money forever. Solar means money once.
Start small: a single panel, a deep-cycle battery, and a few 12V lights will teach you more in a month than a year of reading. Then scale up.
