I’ve got boys. Here’s what I’ve learned: kids don’t want a lecture about self-sufficiency. They want a job that’s actually real.
Give them real work with real stakes. Carry the water bucket, the chickens actually need it. Hammer the nails, the coop actually needs walls. When the work matters, they show up different.
What doesn’t work: making them weed for four hours. What works: “who can fill this bucket fastest,” then they’re done and they go play outside.
They’ll eat vegetables they grew themselves that they’d never touch from a store. That’s not parenting advice, that’s just what happens.
And yeah, it’s slower with kids. Everything is slower with kids. It’s also the entire point.
