Urban Homesteading

No land? No problem. Homesteading is a direction, not an acreage.

What you can do in a city or suburb right now:

  • Grow food: containers, raised beds, a community garden plot. A 4×8 bed grows a shocking amount of food.
  • Preserve food: a water-bath canner works in any kitchen.
  • Keep small livestock where legal: quail, rabbits, sometimes chickens, check your city ordinances first.
  • Make things: bread, soap, candles, fermented everything.
  • Cut the bills: line-dry clothes, cook from scratch, kill the subscriptions you don’t use.

Every dollar you don’t spend is a dollar your homestead doesn’t have to earn. Start where you are with what you have.
